How Teachers Can Support And Evaluate Other Teachers
How Teachers Can Support And Evaluate Other Teachers Youre a teacher. Your performance is evaluated by teachers, judged and rated by teachers. Your mentor is a teacher, and your boss is a teacher. Imagine that. Would you love it or hate it? What if youre a student or parent how do you feel then? The Montgomery County Public Schools system in Rockville, Maryland has a unique process of teachers evaluating other teachers, according to an article in the New York Times. Stronger teachers provide support to weaker ones, and teachers there also have the power to fire weaker teachers if they do not improve. The program, Peer Assistance and Review (PAR), allows more senior teachers to mentor new teachers and struggling veteran teachers. If the mentoring and assistance does not work, then the PAR panel of eight teachers and eight principals can vote to fire the struggling teacher(s). The PAR program also has the power to question tenured teachers. This program began 11 years ago, and it has voted to fire 200 teachers; 300 more have resigned after the comments in a PAR hearing, said Jerry D. Weast, superintendent of the Montgomery County Public School system. Weast also said that only five teachers were fired before the PAR program was implemented 11 years ago. The school system said that trust is pivotal when implementing the PAR program. All teachers must buy into the program, believing that they wont be fired to be made an example out of or because of their salary. Teachers must believe that the PAR panel will always act in the best interest of the school and its students for it to be successful. It took three to five years to build the trust to get PAR in place, Weast told the New York Times. Teachers had to see we werent playing gotcha. The Montgomery County Public School system is one of the growing number of schools to implement the PAR and other similar programs. Many other schools are beginning to extend teachers control and authority beyond the classroom to administrative decisions of hiring/firing and actually shaping course curriculum. Many believe that teachers know whats best for schools and students more so than anyone else involved in education because they are right there on the front lines of it. They believe veteran, proven teachers are better judges of good and bad teaching. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, told Weast that he supported his schools actions, saying, Youre going where the country needs to go, according to Weast and the New York Times. Unfortunately, for Weast and the Montgomery County Public School system, the PAR program will have to go. The Obama administrations Race to the Top program is trying to improve the quality of teachers just as the PAR program. Yet, the Montgomery County Public School system does not submit its students test scores to the federal government, thus making it ineligible for the $12 million Race to the Top funding.

The Life-Changing Thing to Do at Your Next Voice Lesson
The Life-Changing Thing to Do at Your Next Voice Lesson Suzy S. How can you ensure youre making the most of your time in your singing lessons? Record yourself singing, so you can listen back on it later! Consider this advice from Hayward, CA teacher Molly R... Back when I first started voice lessons, my teacher always made sure before we got started that I brought my tape (this was the early 90s!) so that I could record the lesson. As both a student and a teacher, I certainly know the value in recording your voice lessons. When you record yourself singing, you learn everything a LOT quicker. Do you find yourself asking your teacher, What should I practice? There wonât be any questions as to what you need to work on if you simply refer to your recordings! Youâll hear what worked ⦠what didnt work⦠and furthermore, youâll have all your vocal warm-ups in there. If you donât record your lessons, youre likely to forget some of the exercises . Take it up a notch take a video recording! Itâs even more beneficial if you can get a video recording of yourself. This way you can see absolutely everything youâre doing after all, you are a performer! You can see how youâre standing, any tension you may carry, your expressions, and so on. The more you can capture, the more helpful it will be in your overall development as a singer. You do more than just make sound. But do keep in mind that what you hear as youâre making your sound is different from what everyone else hears! Thatâs another reason why you must record yourself singing during voice lessons. Although we go by feel rather than listening as we sing, itâs still important to know what we actually sound like. I like to remind my students that you usually are a lot more pleased with the sound on the recording than you thought you would be so donât be afraid! Dont have fancy equipment? Thats OK The good news is that itâs very easy to record your voice lessons these days. Almost everyone has a smartphone or tablet, and both are excellent for recording and simple to use. Since youâre usually carrying it around, make sure you take it out at the beginning of your lesson and USE IT! You and your voice teacher will both be very happy that you did. Make recording your voice lessons a habit, and youâll definitely find yourself making steady progress! Molly R. teaches online and in-person singing lessons in Hayward, CA. Stanford Offers Free Artificial Intelligence Class Online
Stanford Offers Free Artificial Intelligence Class Online Two Stanford professors have announced that they will offer a free online class on artificial intelligence, according to an article in theNew York Times. Stanford professors, Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig two of the worlds best-known artificial intelligence experts will teach the course. Over 112,000and counting people have already enrolled in the class, which is nearly six times the entire Stanford student body. Students range from high school to retirees, and the course will represent students from 175 countries. Thrun and Norvig said that they will teach this course as part of an education experiment. They are trying to use technology to extend knowledge beyond Stanfords elite student body. The vision is: change the world by bringing education to places that cant be reached today, said Thrun. Stanford will offer two additional free courses. The first will be an introductory course on database software, taught by Jennifer Widom, chairwoman of the computer science department, and the second will be an introduction to machine learning, taught by Andrew Ng. Students will not get grades or credit for the course, but they will be ranked in comparison to other students in the class, and they will receive a statement of accomplishment. Students do not need to pass a test to get into the class. But to keep up, they may need some higher math classes like linear algebra and probability theory. This class is great for any high school student interested in going to Stanford. It probably wont significantly affect your chances of being accepted, but its a perfect opportunity to get on Stanford'sradar and show them youre interested. Even if youre not interested in Stanford, participating in this class can only help your college application. Not many other students will be able to say that they took a class at Stanford. The rapid commercialization of high-speed Internet access has created a new wave of education experiments. Many other professors have recorded their class lectures and uploaded them to YouTube for free. The Stanford courses will be taught in a similar way. The three classes will use streaming Internet video for lectures and interactive technologies for quizzes and grading. Stanford has used this structure to teach smaller groups of students in the past. The professors will use a Google moderator service that will allow students to vote on the best questions for professors to respond to in an online chat or streaming video. They are exploring possibilities to personalize exams to help eliminate cheating. The Stanford professors are hoping to use the Internet and other technological advances to extend education. Ng said that he hopes to see the equivalent of a Stanford computer science degree on the Web someday.
Is a B-School Study Abroad Program Right for Me
Is a B-School Study Abroad Program Right for Me If youre looking for a unique addition to your b-school experience, incorporating a study abroad program may be right for you. A study abroad component within your business school program can give you the chance to foster skills and gain knowledge that you may not otherwise acquire. To identify if a b-school study abroad program is right for you, examine where you want to study, what available programs are offered in this area, and if this endeavor aligns with what you hope to get out of your business school experience. Here are four ways to know if a b-school study abroad program is right for you: Identify where you would like to study abroad during b-school Though there are dozens of countries that you might like to travel to, you only have enough time during business school to select one or perhaps two countries at most. Additionally, not every MBA program offers study abroad opportunities to every country that has a business school. Certain schools partner with other programs to provide specific study abroad programs. For example, in addition to international conferences and global career treks, The Wharton School (at the University of Pennsylvania) offers students a number of study abroad experiences. Graziadio Business School (at Pepperdine University) partners with schools on multiple continents for students who hope to spend full trimesters abroad. Investigate the study abroad programs your school offers and where they are each located. [RELATED: 3 Things to Know About MBA Minors] Note what you would like to learn when studying abroad in b-school The course catalog offered at one MBA program rarely matches that of another MBA program, even for business schools in the same city. Usually, you can count on the MBA basic coursesaccounting, finance, marketing, and operationsto be covered at most business schools across the globe. That being said, elective courses will vary widely from school to school. Therefore, check the courses offered by the study abroad programs youre interested in before applying. Note factors like: If your concentration is consulting, a program without strategy classes might not be an appropriate fit. If your concentration is marketing, a program focused mainly on finance might not be applicable. When searching b-school study abroad programs, look for an opportunity that offers a curriculum that matches your educational goals. Understand how studying abroad during b-school will affect your recruiting process Where do you want to work after you complete your MBA program? Will the companies youre interested in only recruit at your school during the time that youd like to study abroad? If youre concerned that studying abroad for an entire semester could limit your career search opportunities, then consider international experiences that provide global exposure but take less of your time. Some business schools, like Stern School of Business (at New York University), offer shorter study abroad opportunities that last one or two weeks during student breaks, to locations such as Australia, China, and Costa Rica. This would allow you to travel abroad, but still be able to participate in career events, as well as hold club leadership positions offered during the regular semesters at your school. Examine your business school timeline and identify how a study abroad experience would best fit it. [RELATED: 3 Ways Struggling B-School Students Can Re-Focus This Semester] Examine what you hope to get out of your b-school experiencewhether or not it relates to study abroad Each student has a personal agenda for business school. Some students wish to find greater opportunities in their industry, some plan to transition into another industry, and others hope to explore positions in different countries. Additionally, a few students want to stay in the same job, at the same company, in the same country, but earn a graduate degree in business to learn skills necessary to excel in their existing position. Determine what you want to achieve in your MBA program and whether studying abroad will help you reach your goals. If you want to work for a multinational corporation and take advantage of positions that become available in different countries, then international experience would be beneficial to have during your career search. If you hope to stay in one country at a company that works with clients throughout the world, then studying abroad would help you interact with those clients in a more informed fashion. Conversely, if you want to work for a company that only does business in the country that your MBA program is located in, then studying abroad may not provide a significant return on your investment of time, energy, and money. [RELATED: 5 Tips to Ease the Transition from Business School to the Business World] Before you make a decision about studying abroad during business school, consider all of your options. Many schools offer students a variety of international opportunities that range in length, cost, language, and location. Explore what your school has to offer. Then, select a b-school study abroad program that works best for your overall MBA goals. Any topics you want to know more about? Let us know!
